Handmade Retro Arcade Joystick for Classic Games
There is a noticeable difference between playing a classic arcade game with an ordinary controller and placing your hand on a full-size arcade stick with large buttons. That feeling inspired me to design and build this handmade retro arcade joystick.
I did not want another lightweight plastic controller that looked like hundreds of mass-produced models. I wanted a solid wooden enclosure, a familiar arcade control layout and a joystick that would look at home in a dedicated retro gaming setup.
Every part of this model was assembled by hand, from preparing the wooden enclosure and installing the arcade stick to wiring the buttons, connecting the USB controller board, applying the finish and carrying out the final tests.

Built for people who still enjoy classic games
Classic arcade games have their own rhythm. The movement of the stick needs to feel direct, while every button press should be quick and clear. Playing with an arcade joystick creates a very different experience from using a keyboard or an ordinary gamepad.
This single-player model is suitable for fighting games, platformers, beat ’em ups, classic shooters, sports games and many other retro titles designed around a stick and large arcade buttons.
It also fits naturally into a home retro gaming corner , where it becomes part of the visual setup rather than simply another controller.

One arcade stick and ten buttons
The upper panel includes one arcade stick with a blue ball-top handle, eight large buttons for gameplay commands and two additional buttons. The components follow the familiar Sanwa-style appearance often associated with classic arcade controls.
The layout shown in the photographs is the standard layout used for this model. The function of each button can be assigned inside the game, emulator or frontend being used.
A solid varnished wooden enclosure
The enclosure is made from 12 mm poplar plywood. The natural wood grain gives the controller a warmer and more distinctive appearance than a typical mass-produced plastic model.
The surface was carefully prepared and finished with three coats of clear water-based varnish. The varnish protects the wood while keeping its natural texture visible.
The upper panel measures approximately 30 × 20 cm, while the total enclosure height is around 7.5 cm. The size provides enough room for a comfortable hand position while remaining compact enough for a desk, shelf or smaller gaming area.

Technical specifications
What is inside the enclosure?
The internal construction is just as important as the outside appearance. The arcade stick and every individual button are connected to a USB controller board, which converts each input into a command recognised by the computer.
The enclosure is reinforced from the inside with wooden supports. The hardboard bottom panel is recessed into the lower part of the frame, leaving the plywood structure visible around the edges.
The finished joystick was tested to make sure that the stick, every button and the USB connection worked correctly.

USB connection and compatibility
The joystick connects through a standard USB cable. A compatible computer will normally recognise it as a USB controller, after which the stick and buttons can be assigned inside the game or emulator settings.
It may also work with other systems that support standard USB controllers, although compatibility depends on the specific hardware, operating system and software configuration.
Compatibility with PlayStation, Xbox and other modern consoles should not be assumed without checking the exact console and any required adapter support.

A small return to the old arcades
For many of us, arcade controls bring back memories of game rooms, tokens, loud buttons and waiting for another turn. A similar atmosphere later appeared in the internet cafés and LAN centres of the 2000s , where games were played together with plenty of noise, cheering and the familiar promise of “just one more round”.
This joystick was not intended to be a perfect replica of one particular arcade cabinet. Its purpose was to bring part of that classic playing experience to a modern computer and a home gaming space.
A fixed and tested design
The model shown here uses the same stick, buttons, control layout and USB electronics throughout the project. Keeping the layout fixed made it easier to test the construction and maintain a consistent playing experience.
The standard version keeps the natural wood appearance beneath the clear varnish. A different enclosure colour may be used in a future build, but the controls and their arrangement remain unchanged.
Because the enclosure is handmade, small differences in wood grain and individual finishing details are natural. Those differences are part of the character of a handmade object.
The project may also be interesting to anyone looking for an unusual retro gift idea or inspiration for a personal arcade-style gaming setup.
