Life in Yugoslavia Before Mobile Phones and the Internet

Days Without Phones and the Internet

Life before mobile phones and the internet in Yugoslavia feels almost unreal today. However, back then, that was simply everyday life. I still remember evenings when my mother would pick up the landline phone and call the wake-up service.

“On 3324334, at 4:30, thank you,” she would calmly say. That was our alarm clock. There were no apps or phone settings — just trust that the phone would ring at the right time.

Then, early in the morning, the phone would ring and mark the beginning of another day. For adults — work. For me — school and another day full of childhood adventures.

School Without Phones and Distractions

I remember those days in the late 1990s, when the internet was still not part of everyday life, and school was a place where everything happened in real life. We didn’t have phones in our hands, nor could we escape into screens. Because of that, all our energy went into whatever was happening around us.

Of course, there were teachers whose classes required complete silence and discipline. During those lessons, nobody dared to cause trouble.

However, the moment we entered a class with less control — in my case, mathematics — all that bottled-up energy suddenly exploded. That was when we released our energy through laughter, jokes, and harmless childhood mischief 😁

Sometimes the atmosphere became completely chaotic. Paper balls flew across the classroom, chalk ended up everywhere, and every moment turned into another reason to laugh. At times, the lesson felt more like a break than actual learning.

Still, looking back today, those were harmless moments that became part of childhood memories. We didn’t have phones to distract us, so we created our own entertainment.

The Stories That Spread Through School

There were also many stories about other school shifts and teachers. We heard about one math teacher who stayed completely calm no matter what happened in the classroom. People said that students would slowly move their desks closer to him during class, while some jokingly wrote with chalk on the back of his jacket, and he barely reacted at all. At the time, it sounded unbelievable and funny to us.

Still, there was one huge difference compared to today — everything happened in real life. There were no recordings, no social media, and no viral videos. Everything stayed inside the classroom, becoming part of school memories.

The First Encounter With Computers

In the late 1990s, the first home computers slowly started appearing. The dial-up modem would crackle and beep while trying to connect, and installing Windows from floppy disks felt like a small adventure. Still, all of that lasted only briefly — real life was still happening outside, among people.

Life Before Mobile Phones and the Internet Felt Real

Days without phones and the internet didn’t mean we were bored. On the contrary, they meant we were truly present. We talked, laughed, and created memories that stayed with us forever.

After school, there was no endless scrolling. Instead, we went outside, played in the streets, and returned home only when it got dark.

Why Do We Still Remember Those Days?

Today we have everything — phones, internet, and unlimited content. Yet many times we no longer have what we had back then: attention, time, and presence.

That is why life before mobile phones and the internet is remembered differently. Maybe it was not perfect, but it felt real.
